BADMINTON
 

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

1. Player eligibility must be submitted no later than 24 hours prior to league play. Further additions to the player list during the season must also be submitted 24 hours prior to participation in league play.

RULES

1. Current International Badminton Rules will be followed with the following exceptions and SHSAA modifications:

- All games will be played to fifteen points.
- Any athlete who deliberately alters the flight of a bird (doctoring) will be disqualified from the competition.
- All competitors must dress in a predominately white uniform or in a school uniform that reflects the school colours. Doubles teams must be uniform in their dress.

2. Protective eye wear is mandatory during interschool badminton contests, for all doubles badminton.
3. Play is conducted on the honor system with no official umpire or scorekeeper.

LEAGUE STRUCTURE

1. Play will be conducted in five categories: boys & girls singles, boys and girls doubles and mixed doubles. Participants may each enter only one category on a given league night, in tournaments, and in district finals. However, a player may play in one category one league night and in another category the next league night.
2. Each school may enter a maximum of two teams in each category for the District Tournament. The format shall be a straight double knock-out tournament. A match winner shall be the player or team winning the best of three games against an opponent.
3. To be eligible for District play-offs a player must participate in 50% of the non-developmental league nights. Ex. - Presently there are 4 league nights & 2 developmental nights. To be eligible for District Play-offs a player just participate in at least 2 of the 4 league nights. They do not have to participate in the developmental nights. A Player who is unable to participate in 50% of non- developmental league nights because of an injury, verified by a doctor, will be allowed to play in District play-offs.
4. Players unable to compete in Regional play will not be allowed to play in the District Tournament without prior consent of all head coaches on or prior to the last league night.
5. A player who wins a District Tournament and chooses not to compete at the Regional tournament shall have their title and medal taken away unless the player receives MJHSAD approval.
6. The MJHSAD shall enter two teams in each category into the Regional Tournament.
7. The Yonex, Mavis 350, Blue Band shuttle is the approved competition shuttle. Each school will take turns providing two dozen birds for league nights. The commissioner will decide on the rotation at the beginning of the year. The MJHSAD will provide birds for tournaments and the SHSAA will provide birds for the District Tournament.
8. Players must be prepared to play at an appointed time. Players late by more than fifteen minutes will be defaulted.

AWARDS

The MJHSAD Shield for badminton will be awarded to the school accumulating the most points for all matches won in league play on the basis of one point per match won. The Shield will be awarded at the
District Tournament.

LEAGUE DISCIPLINE

1. The penalty for violation of the Sports Activity Rules may result in forfeit of game or games in which violation occurred.
