TRACK AND FIELD

PLAYER ELIGIBILITY

1. Player eligibility must be submitted no later than 24 hours prior to the first meet of the season. The commissioner will set the exact date. Further additions during the track season must also be submitted 24 hours prior to any of the track meets.
2. Categories of Competition:

- SENIOR - Sixteen and over as of September 1st of current school year.
- JUNIOR - Under 16 as of August 31st of current school year.
- MIDGET - Under 15 as of August 31st of current school year.

RULES

1. Meets will be conducted in accordance with the current CTFA rule book with weight and rule modifications listed below.
2. As the track and jump areas are all-weather artificial surfaces, Chevron surface spikes longer than 6 mm in length will not be allowed. Athletes will be checked prior to each event and will not be allowed to compete with illegal footwear. The meet will not be delayed to allow athletes to change spikes.
3. The use of standing starts will be allowed for all races in MJHSAD and SHSAA events.
4. In the event of lane infractions during a race, the advantage gained rule will apply. Infractions will be reported to the track referee who will rule on the violation.

MEET STRUCTURE

1. The Commissioner shall delegate duties to each member school to provide officials (teacher & student) for all interschool meets.
2. Mini-meets: Unlimited entries in each age classification. Maximum of two relay teams per age classification.
3. Invitational Meet:
- Schools may enter two competitors in hurdles, 100 m, 200 m, 400 m and three competitors in all other events. Pole vault will not be offered as one of the events.
- The 1600 m open boys & girls medley relay and the open co-ed 4 x 100 m relay will replace the 4 x 400 m relays.
- Competitors are limited to four events plus relays.
- In the 100 m, competitors will advance to the final as follows: the top two finishers from each semi-final plus the four fastest non-qualifiers. Lanes 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be reserved for the fastest times.
- The hurdles and 400 m races will be timed section finals.
- In the 200 m, there will be three heats and competitors will advance to the final as follows: the top finisher from each heat, plus the three fastest non-qualifiers. Lanes 3, 4 and 5 will be reserved for the fastest times.
- There will be three trials in the preliminary rounds of the shot put, discus, javelin, long jump and triple jump. The top six in the preliminaries will have an additional three attempts.
- Competitors shall be entered in their proper age group although coaches may move a competitor to a higher age group for a meet.
- All competitors must wear uniforms in keeping with the school colours. Track club uniforms or commercially printed T-shirts are not acceptable.
- Team scoring: 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 2 - 1.
- 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbon on card for each event.

4. District Meet:
- The date of the District meet shall be determined annually and at least one week prior to the SHSAA Provincial Meet.
- Preparations for the meet will be under the direction of the Commissioner. Schools will share in providing staff and students to serve as officials.
- An athlete may be entered in a maximum of four events plus relays.
- Events:

TRACK: 80 Metre Hurdles (30") Midget, Junior & Senior Girls
100 Metre Hurdles (30") Midget Boys
100 Metre Hurdles (33") Junior Boys
100 metre Hurdles (36") Senior Boys
100 Metres, 200 Metre, 400 Metres, 800 Metre, 1500 Metre, 3000 Metres.
4 x 100 Metre Relay, Open 4 x 400 Metre Relay

HURDLE PLACEMENT: 80 Metres:
Midget, Junior & Senior Girls:
- Start line to first hurdle - 12 metres
- Distance between hurdles - 8 metres (Midget Girls - 7.5 metres)
- Last hurdle to finish line - 12 metres (Midget Girls - 15.5 metres)

HURDLE PLACEMENT: 100 Metres:
Midget, Junior & Senior Boys:
- Start line to first hurdle - 13 metres
- Distance between hurdles - 8.5 metres
- Last hurdle to finish line - 10.5 metres

FIELD: Long Jump
Triple Jump Take-off board - 8 metres from landing area for girls and 10 metres from landing area for boys.
High Jump MG - 1.15 m, JG - 1.20 m, SG - 1.25 m
MB - 1.35 m, JB - 1.40 m, SB - 1.45 m
Pole Vault Girls - 1.25 m, Boys - 2.00 m
Discus (1 kg.) Midget, Junior & Senior Girls, Midget Boys
Discus (1.61 kg.) Junior & Senior Boys
Javelin (600 gr.) Midget, Junior & Senior Girls, Midget Boys
Javelin (800 gr.) Junior & Senior Boys

- Entries: There is no limit on team size, however:
MIDGET: Three competitors per event in the 800 m, 1500 m, 3000 m, long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, shot put and javelin. Two entries in hurdles, 100 m, 200 m and 400 m.

JUNIOR & SENIOR: Two competitors per event.
- In all throwing events, plus long and triple jump, competitors shall be given a warm-up try, three competition tries, with the top six receiving three additional tries.
- The 3000 M races will be run on the day prior to the meet.
- The winner of each semi-final heat plus the next four fastest times will advance to the 200 metre final.
- The 400 M race will be a timed section final. Entries will be hand seeded into a slow heat and a fast heat with the slow heat running first.
- Scoring for each event shall be based on the top six places - 10 - 8 - 6 - 4 - 2 - 1.
- A scratch meeting shall be held prior to the start of the meet. No names may be added or changed at this time.
- School uniforms shall be worn by all competitors.
- Awards:
- A team trophy shall be presented to the school accumulating the greatest point total in the meet. In the event of a tie in the aggregate point total at the District meet, the schools shall be declared co-champions and each school shall hold the trophy for an equal part of the school year.
- Medals for first, second and third place in individual age classifications (boys & girls)
shall be presented following the meet. A tie shall be resolved by presentation of duplicate awards.
- Ribbons on a card will be awarded for 1st to 4th place standings in each event

SAFETY

1. Limit the number of javelins used (2 - 600 gram & 2 - 800 gram).
2. Limit the number of discus used ( 2 - 1 kg. & 2 1.61 kg).
3. Limit the number of shot put used ( 2 - 4 kg. & 2 12 lb.).4. Only throwing implements supplied by the meet officials shall be allowed for practice and competition purposes.
5. The landing areas of both the javelin and discus must be roped off along the sector lines at least waist high.
6. Spectators must be kept well back from the runway and throwing area during a throwing event by the use of a restraining line or rope.
7. If an adequate cage for the discus event is not available, the event will not be held.
8. Each team will supply its own first aid kit.
9. Each team will have a first aid qualified adult to attend all meets.

DISCIPLINE

1. Penalty for violation of the Sports Activity Rules may result in forfeit of meet(s) in which the violation occurred.

RECORDS

1. Records maintained since 1974.

PROVINCIAL MEET

1. The Head Coach of the Moose Jaw District Team will be rotated amongst the schools, using the following rotation: Central, Peacock, Riverview, Vanier.
2. The Head Coach will be responsible for handing out the provincial uniform and collecting them after the meet. The uniforms will then be passed onto the next school in the rotation. $60.00 will be charged for each lost uniform or $30.00 each for a lost singlet or pair of shorts.
3. Head coaches of the other schools (or their designates) shall help the head provincial coach to choose, prepare and accompany the team to the provincial meet.
4. The selection of the District Team for the Provincial meet by the representative coaches from all schools shall be based on the performance of athletes in the District Meet. The meeting to be held immediately following the District Meet.
5. Two officials must accompany the team to the Provincial Meet.
6. Students attending the Provincial Meet may be charged a fee to help cover the cost of travel and accommodations if required.
