The junior basketball season came to a close with the SWAC district championships.  The girls’ final was played on February 24 in Shaunavon when the visiting Swift Current Comp grade 9 Ardens visited the Silhouettes.  It was a close game with the Ardens taking the early lead but Shaunavon going into half time with a 24-20 edge.  At the end of the 3rd quarter it was 36-27 for the Silhouettes.  The final score was 47-33 for Shaunavon.  Congrats to coach Stefani Wynn and the Silhouettes on the victory!  The boys’ final was played on Feb. 25 with Maple Creek Rebels visiting the Swift Current Comp gr 9 Colts.  The Colts took the early lead and did not look back.  Maple Creek made it close at times but the Colts maintained their lead.  The half time score was 24-17 and the final score was 61-46.  Congrats to coach Ken Rand and the Colts on the victory!

                The senior basketball league played the boys and girls semifinals on Feb. 23.  On the girls’ side, it was the #1 Shaunavon Silhouettes defeating Frontier 77-33.  The Silhouettes were led by Hannah MacNeil with 15 pts and three other players with 10 – Emily Galey, Kortlynn Fuller and Paige Kirkpatrick.  Frontier’s top scorer was Madison Bertram with 12 followed by Avery Evenson with 11.  The other game was extremely close.  Maple Creek hosted the Swift Current Jr Ardens.  After being tied at the end of regulation 55-55, the overtime saw the Ardens claim the victory 63-59.  The Ardens’ top scorer was Mackenzie Veason with 16 followed by Lauryn Hayes with 15.  Sydney Taplin was the top Rebel’s scorer with 18 pts while LeQueasha Gyman added 12.   The final will feature Swift Current Jr Ardens at Shaunavon on March 1st at 5:00 p.m.

                The boys’ side saw the #1 seeded Shaunavon Shadows defeat Frontier 104-24. The Shadows top scorer was Nixen Voll with 33 pts and Ryan Selvig with 24.  Frontier’s Cody Corrothers had 8.   The 2/3 game saw the Maple Creek Rebels upset the #2 ranked Swift Current Jr Colts 64-61.  Justice Smith led the Rebels with 32 pts while Brayden Wasilow added 14.  Hunter Vance was the Colts top scorer with 14 and three other players added 10 – Tyson Lang-Burkey, Stephen Addai and Wesley King.  The final will feature the Maple Creek Rebels at Shaunavon on March 1st at 7:00 p.m.

                The SWAC junior curling championships were held on February 26 & 27.  Many thanks to both Hodgeville and Morse rinks (commissioner Carly Bestrop) and all their volunteers for putting on the event!  The Maple Creek girls team won the A side then defeated Val Marie in an extremely close game in the A/B final.  It came down to a draw on the last rock!  Maple Creek’s team was composed of skip Morgan Robinson, 3rd Sydney Windjack, 2nd Hallie Anderson, lead Madison Glascock and coach Holly Jamieson.  In boys’ action, it was the host Hodgeville winning the A side then defeating Leader in the A/B final.  Hodgeville’s team was composed of skip Chayne Krauchek, 3rd Joel Stenberg, 2nd Matt Kerr, lead Rhett Peterson, spare Connor Watson and coach Sandy Krauchek.  The open category was held at Morse rink with Swift Current Comp winning the A side then defeating  Hazlet in the A/B final.  The Comp’s team was composed of skip Grady Rogers, 3rd Colt Cornelson, 2nd Ashtyn Ekstrand, lead Quinn Doane, spare Elliot Gross, coaches Marni Gutscher and James Kissick.  It was a great weekend of curling and sportsmanship!

                The Southwest was represented by 6 senior curling teams at the SHSAA regional curling.  Ponteix and Swift Current Comp were at Biggar for the boys’ competition.  Meanwhile Maple Creek and Hodgeville girls were at Rosetown.  The mixed teams representing us were Hodgeville and Shaunavon.

                All three categories were won by SWAC teams!  The Maple Creek girls captured the A side and the regional title with wins over Glentworth and Hodgeville.  Congrats to skip Brooke Martin, 3rd Anu Maalerud, 2nd Hannah Forbes, lead Josey Robinson, spare Makayla Scheller and coach Marla Martin.  The Hodgeville girls came through the B side and will also advance to provincials. Hodgeville won their first two games over Central Butte and Dinsmore but lost to Maple Creek in the A final.  They beat Glentworth in the B final.  Both teams will now play in SHSAA provincials on March 4 and 5 in Meadow Lake.

                The Hodgeville mixed team composed of skip Hillary Sauder, third Ben Kerr , second Emma Krauchek,  lead Tyson Petersen, spares Teagan Newton and Ryelee Bekker, coach Michelle Potapinski beat Moose Jaw Peacock and Avonlea to the win the A side.  They will now travel to Meadow Lake for provincials on March 4 and 5.  Shaunavon also took part in the mixed category but lost to Avonlea and Moose Jaw Peacock and were eliminated. 

                The boys’ team from Swift Current Comp defeated Assiniboia and Mossbank to win the regional title.  The team was composed of skip Brendan Ross,  3rd Theo Lautsch, 2nd Tanner Ewert,  lead Steven Hughes and coach James Kissick.  The team will now take part in SHSAA provincials in Assiniboia on March 4 and 5.  The Ponteix boys also took part at regionals but losses to Mossbank and Ponteix eliminated them from further play.  Good luck to all four of our teams participating at provincial curling!

                SHSAA basketball playoffs will begin for many of the Southwest teams on March 4/5.  We will be hosting at 3 sites:

1A girls @ Gull Lake.  Teams participating include Gull Lake, Leader, Herbert, Eatonia and Eston (top 2 advance). 

1A boys @ Herbert.  Teams participating include Herbert, Frontier, Vanguard and Eston (top 2 advance).

3A boys @ Maple Creek.  Teams participating include Maple Creek, Shaunavon, Assiniboia and Caronport (top 2 advance).

Other teams on the road include Shaunavon girls at Moose Jaw and Maple Creek girls in Rosetown.

Teams are vying to move onto the SHSAA regional level on March 11/12.

                The Swift Current Comp wrestling team will be taking part in the SHSAA regional wrestling tournament in Prince Albert on March 5 as well.  Good luck wrestlers!
