Officials Corner

High school sport offers much more than the game itself to the participants. High school sport is “Athletics in Education”. Participation in SHSAA activities promotes personal growth in student-athletes by developing loyalty, dedication, teamwork, goal setting, pride, integrity and commitment. Participation in high school sport helps students develop time management skills, build self-confidence, learn self-discipline, and understand the importance of sportsmanship.

Please consider giving back to high school sport by becoming an official. The SHSAA must recruit new officials to ensure continued success and opportunity for high school programs. Many current officials are getting to the age where they are unable to continue at the level they once did. The shortage of available officials in Saskatchewan is at a point where a conscious effort to attract new officials must take place.

There will always be an opportunity for you to be an official for high school sport.  The challenge of officiating can provide some great personal rewards. As an official you must make instantaneous decisions, resolve conflicts and deal with stress and pressure. You are in a position to be a positive role model around children and young adults.  While officiating, you will also enjoy inherent benefits such as: the satisfaction gained from helping high school athletic programs remain viable, the physical exercise involved in officiating, and of course some monetary gain.

Sports officials must be able to bring control to chaos; understand fairness; promote safety and encourage good sportsmanship. A sports official must have the positive characteristics of a police officer, lawyer, judge, accountant, reporter, athlete and diplomat. If you are ready to start enjoying officiating please contact our office by calling 306-721-2151 or emailing d.sandomirsky@shsaa.ca and we can put you in contact with the individuals and groups in your area that could benefit from your involvement.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to give back to high school sport by becoming an SHSAA official.
