CHINOOK SCHOOL DIVISION SPORTS REPORT

It was an exciting day of football in Shaunavon on Nov 14 as the Shadows captured the 2A 9 man provincial title. The Shadows ended a perfect 9-0 season with a 42-28 win over Delisle Rebels on home field. Preceded by sirens, lights and fireworks, the Shadows stormed onto the field to loud applause from the home town fans. But it was the Rebels who stuck first scoring on their first possession. They quickly followed this with a second touchdown to make it 14-0. While the Shadows were slow to start, they regained their composure with quarterback Ryan Selvig running the ball in to make it 14-7 followed by Brock Larson with another touchdown to tie the game at 14. Late in the first half, Shaunavon fumbled the ball deep in their zone and Delisle pounced on it. They quickly scored a touchdown to take the lead back 21-14. In the dying seconds of the first half, quarterback Ryan Selvig got his second touchdown of the game to tie it at 21. The second half saw the Rebels score another touchdown to make it 28-21 Delisle. But at that point, Shaunavon took over! Sparked by an 85 yard run back by Jordan Voll, the Shadows pulled within one point 28-27. Voll followed this with his second touchdown and the Shadows took their first lead of the game 34-28. Voll then got his third touchdown in a row with less than 4 minutes left in the game. The Shadows went for the 2 point conversion and completed it with a toss to Larson to go ahead 42-28. At this point, the defense took over and the Shadows held on to win the title with a 42-28 score. Congratulations to the Shadows and their coaches Garret Glasrud, Justin Illerbrun, Aaron Audette, Mat Irvine, Jordi Thomas, Jesse Volle and manager Rachelle Dordu! Thanks to the students and staff of Shaunavon High and the parents and community members of Shaunavon for hosting such a huge event. This is Shaunavon’s first football championship since 1982.
The SWAC junior volleyball championships were held Nov. 14 at Wymark (boys) and at Shaunavon (girls). On the girls side, there were 6 teams competing – Shaunavon, Frontier, Waldeck, Swift Current Comp, Leader and Hazlet. The teams were split into two pools of 3 and the top 2 advanced. In the first semi final, it was Swift Current Comp over Hazlet 2-0 while the other semi saw Waldeck defeat Leader 2-1. The final saw the Swift Current Comp Ardens defeat Waldeck Warriors 25-20, 25-11. Congrats to the grade 9 Ardens and their coaches Rita Malik and Chantie Champigny-Lucyk!
On the boys side, there were 5 teams competing – Frontier, Wymark, O. M. Irwin, Fox Valley and Leader. The teams played a 5 team round robin with the top two teams meeting in the final. The final saw the home team Wymark Wolverines defeat the Fox Valley Legends 25-15, 25-11. Congrats the Wolverines and their coaches Geoff Horn and Jeff Jago!
SHSAA volleyball regional playoffs continued for the girls teams in all categories 1-5A. SWAC had 3 girls teams taking part at 1A competition in Avonlea. Congrats to the Frontier Raiders who finished 2nd. They will now advance to the provincial tournament in Medstead on Nov. 20 & 21. The Raiders were first in their pool with wins over Avonlea and Cabri. They then defeated Mankota 2-0 in the semi final but lost to Rouleau 2-0 in the final. Good luck to the Raiders and their coaches Tanya Turner and Jaime Nelson at provincials! The teams from Cabri/Hazlet and Leader both finished at 0-2 in pool play and did not advance.
At 2A girls play in Kerrobert, SWAC was represented by Fox Valley and Herbert. Herbert finished pool play at 0-2 and did not advance to the playoff round. Fox Valley had a record of 1-1 with a win over Neilburg 2 sets to 1 but a loss to Langham 2-1. The Legends then lost to the host Kerrobert in the semi final 2-0. They got one more chance to advance to provincials but lost in the 3rd place game to Asquith 2-0 to end their season.
Maple Creek girls travelled to Rosetown for 4A girls’ volleyball. The Rebels had losses to Notre Dame 2-0 and Rosetown 2-0 to end their season.
The Swift Current Ardens took part in 5A girls’ regionals at Yorkton. The Ardens finished second in their pool with a record of 2-1. They had wins over Yorkton (2-0) and Moose Jaw Peacock (2-1) and a loss to Weyburn (2-1). In the quarter finals, the Ardens then defeated Moose Jaw Central by scores of 25-23, 25-19. This put them in the semi final against Balgonie where they lost 25-17, 25-19. The Ardens had one last chance to advance to provincials in the 3rd place game. They defeated Estevan 25-16, 25-19 to secure their spot in the championships in Martensville on Nov 20 & 21. Congrats to the Ardens and their coach Chelsea Hassett!
The Swift Current Colts took part in 5A boys’ regionals at Estevan and came away with the regional title! Congrats to the Colts and their coach Daniel Andrie. The Colts finished with a record of 1-1 in pool play with a 2-0 win over Moose Jaw Peacock and a 2-1 loss to Estevan. They then went on a winning streak defeating Yorkton in the quarter finals (25-11, 25-20), Weyburn in the semi’s (25-20, 25-20) and Estevan in the final (25-19, 25-20). The Colts are excited to be hosting the 5A boys’ provincial championships on Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21. All matches will take place at the Comp. The opening ceremonies will take place at 11:15 on Friday morning and action will start on the double courts at 12:30 p.m. The bronze medal match is scheduled for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. while the gold is set for 5:30 p.m. Good luck to the Colts!
Eastend hosted 1A boys’ conference play on Nov. 14. After the four team round robin, Vanguard was first with a record of 3-0, Glentworth second 2-1 and Eastend third 1-2. All three teams will advance to 1A regionals on Nov. 21 at a location TBD. In other 1A action, Herbert boys travelled to Rouleau for conference play. After the round robin, the Laurels were 1-3 and did not advance.
In 2A action, SWAC will be represented by Fox Valley, Frontier and Ponteix when they travel to Beechy. Leader will be taking part at the 3A boys tourney at LCBI (Outlook). Shaunavon Shadows will host the 4A boys’ regional tournament on Sat, Nov 21. Six teams will take part – Assiniboia, Caronport, Moose Jaw Vanier, Outlook, Biggar and Shaunavon. Matches will start at 9:00 a.m. Good luck to all our teams!
