The volleyball season has come to a close for high school teams as the 1-4A boys provincial championships were held on Nov 27 & 28.  The Southwest was represented by 4 teams.

The Vanguard Valkyrs travelled to Annaheim & Lake Lenore to take part in the 1A championship.  The very young team had a record of 1-3 and did not advance to the playoff round.  They had losses to Borden (2-0), Colonsay (2-0) and Coronach (2-1) and a win over Pierceland (2-1).  Congrats to the Valkyrs and their coaches Rob Englot and Chris Caswell.  Looks promising for next year!

At 2A championships at College Mathieu, the Southwest was represented by the Fox Valley Legends and Frontier Raiders.  The Legends started off well with a record of 3-1 in Pool A – good enough for 2nd place.  They had wins over Arcola (2-0), Frontier (2-0) and Muenster (2-0) but suffered a loss to the eventual gold medalists Edam (2-1).  Meanwhile Frontier finished third in the pool with a record of 2-2.  The Raiders lost both their matches on day 1 (to Edam 2-0 and Fox Valley 2-0) but they bounced back on day 2 with victories over Arcola (2-1) and Muenster (2-1).  In the quarter finals, Fox Valley lost to the eventual silver medalists Hepburn 29-27, 25-19 which ended their provincial run.  Frontier had a strong quarter final against 2nd place in Pool B - College Mathieu/Kincaid and won by scores of 25-23, 25-22.  But they too came up against the tough Hepburn team and lost in the semi 25-16, 25-18.  The Raiders then took on Medstead in the bronze but came up short losing 25-9, 25-20 to finish 4th overall.  Congrats to both the Legends and their coach Darren Lehmann and the Raiders and their coaches Len Fyfe and Keegan Ham!  Great season for both teams.

The Shaunavon Shadows made the long journey up to La Loche for the 4A boys championship.  The Shadows finished 3rd in pool A with a record of 2-2.  The Shadows had wins over Yorkton Sacred Heart (2-0) and Unity (2-1) but losses to Melfort (2-0) and Saskatoon Christian (2-1).  In the quarter final, the Shaunavon boys ran up against a tough opponent in the host La Loche team in a packed gymnasium filled with local fans.  The Shadows lost in two.  Congrats to the Shadows and their coaches Riley Zielke and Kyle Hardin!
