CHINOOK SCHOOL DIVISION SPORTS REPORT

                The community of Hodgeville is proud as they celebrate not one but two provincial curling medals!  Congratulations go out to the girls team which won the gold medal at the SHSAA provincial curling championships at Meadow Lake on March 4 & 5.  The team was composed of skip Mackenzie Buller, 3rd Mikayla Buller, 2nd Chelsea Kennedy, lead Leslee Koch and coach Mike Francis.  The girls finished 2nd in their pool with wins over Ituna and Saskatoon St. Joseph and a loss to Maryfield.  In the other pool, Maple Creek girls (skip Brooke Martin, 3rd Anu Maalerud, 2nd Hannah Forbes, lead Josey Robinson, spare Mikayla Scheller, coach Marla Martin) finished first with wins over Muenster and Lemberg and a loss to Meadow Lake.  This set up a southwest semi final where Hodgeville defeated Maple Creek.  In the gold medal final, Hodgeville defeated Lemberg while in the bronze medal match Maple Creek lost to Maryfield.  Congrats to all our female curlers on a great showing!

                The Hodgeville mixed curling team has one grade 9 and three grade 10’s yet they captured the silver medal at provincial curling in Meadow Lake!  The team is composed of skip Hillary Sauder, 3rd Ben Kerr, 2nd Emma Krauchek, lead Tyson Petersen, spares Teagan Newton & Ryelee Bekker and coach Michelle Potapinski.  The team finished first in Pool A with wins over Naicam, Meadow Lake and Estevan.  They then beat Saskatoon Walter Murray in the semi but lost in the final to Naicam.  Congrats to the young Hodgeville team on a great showing!

                The Swift Current boys curling team took part in SHSAA provincial curling at Assiniboia on March 4 & 5.  This was also a young team with one grade 11 and three grade 9’s – skip Brendan Ross, 3rd Theo Lautsch, 2nd Tanner Ewert, lead Steven Hughes and coach James Kissick.   The boys lost all three of their games (Balgonie, Spiritwood and Muenster) but gained valuable experience for next year. 

                The Shaunavon Shadows and Silhouettes remained undefeated in league play and both captured the league championship on March 1.  The Silhouettes defeated the Swift Current Jr Ardens by a score of 90-36.  The Silhouettes’ top scorer was Hannah MacNeil with 21 pts followed by Courtney Bredahl with 16.  The Ardens had three players with 7 points – Mackenzie Veason, Taylor Coulter and Jessica Warren.  Congrats to the Silhouettes and their coaches Tim Miller, Paige Island and Tara Miller! The boys game saw the host Shadows defeat Maple Creek 93-48.  The Shadows were led by Nixen Voll with 30 points while Ryan Selvig and Jordan Voll added 18.  The top scorers for Maple Creek were AJ Cruz with 23 pts and Justice Smith with 15 points.  Congrats to the Shadows and their coaches Aaron Audette and Jessie Voll!

                SHSAA basketball playoffs have started.  The first level is called conference play which took place on March 5.  In 1A girls at Gull Lake, the lady Lions won their first game against Leader 41-30 but were then defeated by Herbert 71-26.  The Herbert Laurels then beat Eston  in the final 61-26 to capture the conference title and will now advance to regionals.

                The Herbert Laurels boys basketball team hosted conference play and were also victorious.  The Laurels defeated Vanguard in their first game 102-24.  Frontier then topped Eston 65-53.  The final saw the Laurels with the victory over Frontier 100-20.  Both teams will now advance to regionals.

                In 2A girls at Moose Jaw, the Shaunavon Silhouettes won their first game over Moose Jaw Cornerstone 53-36 but lost to Regina’s Harvest City 54-28.  The Silhouettes will advance to regionals.

                In 3A girls play at Rosetown, Maple Creek girls were defeated by Delisle 76-46 and will not advance.

                Maple Creek hosted the 3A boys conference tournament.  The host Rebels lost to Shaunavon in the first game 76-47.  Shaunavon captured the conference title with a 76-45 victory over Caronport and will now advance to regionals.  

                Regional basketball tournaments will be held at a variety of sites on March 11 & 12. 

                The Swift Current Comp wrestling team sent 22 wrestlers to SHSAA small city regionals in Prince Albert on March 5.  The top 4 in each category will advance to provincials in Saskatoon on March 11 & 12.

In the team competition, Swift Current finished 2nd overall.  Good luck the Comp wrestling team and their coaches Allen Blanke and Daniel Marchand at provincials!
