                The Swift Current Ardens are the 5A provincial champs in volleyball!  The girls won the title in Regina on November 18 & 19.  The Ardens had a record of 3-1 in Pool A which was good for second place.  They had wins over Saskatoon St. Joseph 2-1, Weyburn 2-0 and Prince Albert Carlton 2-1.  Their only loss was to Regina Campbell 2-0.  In the quarter finals, the Ardens took on the 3rd place team from Pool B which was Saskatoon Holy Cross.  The Ardens came away with a 25-19, 25-23 victory to put them into the semi final against Saskatoon St Joseph.  The Ardens won again by scores of 25-13, 25-18.  This set up the gold medal match against Regina Campbell.  After splitting the first two sets 25-15, 21-25, it all came down to a third set which the Ardens won 16-14.  Congrats to the Ardens and their coach Shawn Hiebert and assistant coach Liam Choo-Foo!

                The Swift Current Colts were bronze medalists at 5A boys provincials.  The boys were second in Pool A with a record of 3-1.  They had wins over Prince Albert Carlton 2-0, Estevan 2-0 and Saskatoon Holy Cross 2-0.  Their only loss was to Regina LeBoldus 2-0.  In the quarter finals, the Colts played the third place team in Pool B which was Weyburn.  It was a three set victory for the Colts with scores of 25-12, 9-25, 15-13.  The semi final was a tough match against the defending gold medal team from Prince Albert St Mary’s.  The Colts were defeated 25-13, 25-8.  This put them in the bronze medal final against Saskatoon St. Joseph’s where they won by scores of 26-24, 25-15.  Congrats to the Colts and their coach Dan Andrie and assistant coach Brad Hennenfent!

                There were two Southwest reps at 1A girls provincials in Rose Valley – Fox Valley and Frontier.  Frontier finished the tourney with a record of 0-4.  They lost to Englefeld 2-0, Plenty 2-0, Midale 2-0 and Perdue 2-0.  They did not advance to the playoffs.  Fox Valley had a record of 1-3 with losses to Rose Valley 2-0, Dinsmore 2-1 and Goodsoil 2-0.  They had a win over Lemberg 2-0.  This put them in 4th place in Pool B.  In the quarter finals they had to play the 1st place team from Pool A Englefeld.  The girls dropped both sets 25-10, 25-13 and were eliminated.

                Maple Creek Rebelles represented the Southwest at 4A girls provincial volleyball in Lanigan.  The Rebelles finished 0-4 with losses to Lumsden 2-0, Lanigan 2-0, Tisdale 2-0 and Caronport 2-0.  They did not advance to the playoff round. 

                On the boys’ side, Leader hosted 1A boys regional volleyball on Nov. 19.  The 6 team tourney had 2 pools of three.  In Pool A, Vanguard was 1st with wins over Mossbank and Dinsmore.  Leader was 1st in Pool B with wins over Rouleau and Glentworth.  The semi finals saw Vanguard over Rouleau 25-15, 25-19 while Leader defeated Mossbank 25-21, 25-14.  This set up a Southwest final between Leader and Vanguard with Leader edging the Valkyrs 25-20, 25-20.  Congrats to the Saints and their coach Errol Campbell.  Both teams will now advance to the 1A provincials which will be at Chief Kahkewistahaw in Broadview on Nov 25 & 26.  Good luck!

                Fox Valley Legends were at 2A boys regionals at Ecole Mathieu.  The boys finished first in Pool A with wins over Ecole Gravelbourg and Hepburn.  They defeated Beechy in the semi 25-8, 25-9.  The Legends lost a tough final to Kincaid/Ecole Mathieu 21-25, 25-21, 17-19.  But with their second place finish, Fox Valley will advance to 2A boys provincials in Medstead on Nov 25 & 26.  Good luck!!

                At the 4A level, Shaunavon Shadows are regional champs!  The Shadows travelled to Outlook and went through the day undefeated.  They were first in their pool with wins over Caronport and Fort Qu’Appelle.  They beat Melville in the semi 25-17, 25-18 then Fort Qu’Appelle in the final 25-16, 25-14.  Congrats to the Shadows and their coach Riley Zielke.  They will now travel to Biggar for provincials on Nov 25 & 26.  Good luck!!

                The junior volleyball season has come to a close with the SWAC district championships on Nov 19.  Thanks to Fox Valley (commissioner Donald Schmaltz) and Ponteix (commissioner Terry Ross) for hosting!  The girls' side in Ponteix saw the host Predators beat Consul in the first semi 25-27, 25-13, 15-4.  The other semi featured Swift Current Comp grade 9's vs Frontier.  The grade 9 Ardens won in 2 sets 25-15, 25-21.  In the final, the grade 9 Ardens defeated Ponteix 25-15, 25-18.  Congrats to the Ardens and their coaches Chantie Champigny-Lucyk and Carmen McKellar.

                The junior boys tourney was  hosted in Fox Valley.  The first semi featured the host Legends over Frontier 20-25, 25-16, 15-10.  The second semi featured Swift Current Comp grade 9 Colts over Wymark 25-12, 25-13.  In an intense final, the Colts came through in a third set to win the championships 25-18, 14-25, 19-17.  Congrats to the Colts and their coaches Scott Mayall and Brent Millar. 

                With volleyball nearing an end, it is time to turn to winter sports namely basketball, wrestling and curling.  SWAC will be hosting two basketball officials’ clinics.  

1) SABO (Saskatchewan Association of Basketball Officials) will be sending out a clinician for a clinic on Wednesday, November 23 at Swift Current Comp lecture theater.  Start time is 6:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to attend.

2) Beginners Officials clinic will be held on Thursday, December 1 at Swift Current Comp starting at 6:30 p.m.  The clinic will start in classroom 183 for the first half hour then move to the gym.  Participants are encouraged to bring a whistle and wear runners.  Everyone is welcome and there is no cost to attend.
