CHINOOK SCHOOL DIVISION SPORTS REPORT

                The SWAC senior basketball season continued with four games.  The Herbert Laurels saw action twice at home and came away with two wins.   The first was over the Maple Creek Rebelles 53-36 on Jan 17.  Jewel Jacobson has 12 pts to lead the way for the Laurels with Montana Jacobson adding 11.  Alex Mason had 17 pts for Maple Creek with Payton Bock contributing 10.  On January 18, the Laurels hosted Gull Lake Lady Lions and won 43-39.  Jewel Jacobson was once again top scorer with 15 pts while Montana Jacobson had 10.  The Lady Lions’ top scorer was Cassie Jans with 13 pts while two players, Leah Kozroski and Emma Evans, had 9 pts. 

                The first boys game saw the Shaunavon Shadows remain undefeated in league play as they beat Swift Current Jr Colts at home 89-43.  Kirkland Sutter had 20 pts for the winning cause with Austin Smith adding 14.  Bren Medina was the Colts top scorer with 11 pts.  The second boys’ game saw Maple Creek get a road victory in Frontier 82-48.  Justice Smith was the Rebel’s top scorer with Jhon Celedonio adding 10 pts.  The Raiders were led by Cody Carrothers with 18 pts.

                Curling playoffs will begin for both juniors and seniors in February.  There are 4 levels of playoffs for senior teams: section, districts, regionals and provincials.  The senior section playoffs will occur on the February 3-4 weekend at three locations:

Cypress Hills section @ Hazlet on Saturday, Feb 4.  Schools taking part will be Leader, Maple Creek & Hazlet

Rolling Hills section @ Hodgeville on February 3 & 4.  Schools taking part will be Hodgeville, Gull Lake, Ponteix, Swift Current Comp. 

Whitemud section @ Shaunavon on February 3.  Schools taking part will be Frontier, Val Marie, Eastend and Shaunavon. 

At the senior level, there are three categories – boys, girls and mixed.

                Two senior boys volleyball team from Chinook have been recognized with awards.  Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association recognizes one team from each of the boys & girls provincial championships in all categories (1-5A).  Earlier in January the Shaunavon Shadows and their coach Riley Zielke received their award for the 4A boys category.  It was also announced that Vanguard Valkyrs and their coaches Chris Caswell & Stephen McComish will be recognized at the 1A level.  The award will be presented at a later date.  Congrats to both teams on achieving this prestigious award!
