The junior basketball league came to a close with the finals being held on Feb. 16.  The semi final scores for the girls’ side were #4 Shaunavon 15 @ #1 Herbert 37  and #3 Maple Creek 36 @ #2 Swift Current Comp grade 9’s 32.  The final then saw the Herbert Laurels go undefeated in the SWAC junior league and score a 51-29 home court victory over Maple Creek to capture the title.  On the boys’ side, it was #4 Maple Creek 44 @ #1 Swift Current Comp grade 9’s 63 and #3 Herbert 58 @ #2 Frontier 68.  The final was hosted at the Comp and the Colts made a second half come back to beat Frontier 66-48 to also remain undefeated and capture the boys’ crown. 

                The SWAC senior basketball league held their semi finals on  February 14.  The girls’ games featured #1 Shaunavon defeat #4 Herbert 69-37.  The Silhouettes top scorer was Hannah MacNeil with 15 pts followed by Kortlynn Fuller and Jensen Piquette with 12 pts.  The Laurels’ top scorer was Montana Jacobson with 11 pts while Jewel Jacobson added 10.  The other semi final saw the #2 Swift Current Jr Ardens host #3 Maple Creek and get a 66-55 win.  Vanessa Clothier had 17 pts to lead the Ardens while Elise Hildebrandt added 13.  Maple Creek’s Alex Mason had 17 pts and Claudia Lim contributed 8. 

                The boys’ semi final saw the #1 Shaunavon Shadows defeat #4 Frontier 90-37.  Austin
Smith led the Shadows with 16 pts while Brock Oberle and Kirkland Sutter had 15 pts.  The Raider’s top scorers were Lawrence Loyola with 14 pts and Cody Carrothers with 10.  The other semi saw #2 Maple Creek get the home victory over the #3 Swift Current Jr Colts 83-37.  The Rebels’ Justice Smith had 25 pts while Arthur Fritzke had 19.  Ethan Riley was the Colts top scorer with 15 pts while Bren Medina added 7 pts. 

                The SWAC senior basketball finals will be held February 28 at Shaunavon.  The girls will play first with Swift Current Jr Ardens playing the Silhouettes at 5:00 followed by the Maple Creek boys playing the Shadows. 

                There are three levels of SHSAA senior basketball playoffs – conference play on March 10 & 11, regional play on March 17 & 18 and finally HOOPLA (provincial championships) being held March 24 & 25 in Regina.  The Southwest will be hosting two playoffs site for conference play.  Frontier boys will host 1A boys on March 10 & 11 with 6 teams competing while Shaunavon girls will host a 2A girls conference tournament on March 11 with 4 teams participating.  The rest of our SW teams will be on the road for conference play:

Shaunavon boys @ Regina

Maple Creek boys @ Kindersley

Gull Lake, Herbert & Leader girls @ Eston

Maple Creek girls @ Caronport

Swift Current Colts and Ardens will not play until the March 17 & 18 regional tournaments. 

                Swift Current Comp and curling club will host SHSAA regional curling on March 3 & 4.  There will be 6 teams in each category:  2 from the Southwest, 2 from South Central and 2 from Regina.  Teams will be vying for spots at the SHSAA provincial curling championships which will be held March 10 & 11. 

 

                The SWAC junior district curling finals will be held on March 3 & 4.  The girls will be played in Consul and boys & open in Eastend:

Girls teams include Maple Creek, Fox Valley, Gull Lake, Val Marie and Consul.  Curling at Consul will start at 1:00 on Friday then again at 10:00 on Saturday morning. 

Boys teams include Fox Valley, Hazlet, Swift Current Comp, Ecole Centennial and Val Marie.

Open teams include Maple Creek, Success, Frontier, Shaunavon and Eastend.

Curling at Eastend will start at noon on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
