Swift Current Comp wrestlers came home with 3 medals from the SHSAA provincial championships which were held March 17 & 18 in Warman.  Capturing gold was Austin Shopa in the 100kg category.  This is Austin’s 3rd medal in three years.  He got silver in 2015 and gold in 2016.  Congrats to Austin on a great high school wrestling career!  Finishing with a silver medal was Aleah Nickel in the 56 kg category.  This follows up on Aleah’s bronze last year.  Finishing with a bronze was Brock Doerksen in the 77kg category.  Brock is also graduating and this is his second medal as he got gold in 2016.  Also participating at provincials was Kayden Dudley, Michael Sisa, Remington Tschetter, Sebastian Marchand and Anders Mitchell.  Congrats to the Comp wrestling team and their coaches Allen Blanke, Daniel Marchand and manager Tracey Martin!

Regional basketball tournaments occurred throughout the province on March 17 and 18.  The southwest hosted 2A girls and 2A boys at Shaunavon.  Thanks to Shaunavon for hosting – job well done! The Shaunavon Silhouettes had a great showing capturing the regional title and a spot at SHSAA HOOPLA.  The #3 ranked Silhouettes opened the tournament with a 79-53 win over Maidstone.  They met Lashburn in the final.  The Silhouettes had a substantial lead but the Lady Lobos chipped away and in the 4th quarter made it a tie game with less than a minute left.  But with 28 seconds left, Shaunavon scored and then converted two free throws to make the final 64-60.  The Silhouettes will now be the lone Southwest representative at HOOPLA which will be held March 24 & 25 in Regina.  Good luck to the Silhouettes and their coaches Tim Miller, Paige Island and Tara Coburn!  The #5 ranked Shaunavon Shadows got off to a good start beating Norquay 68-45.  This put them into the final on Saturday afternoon against a fast moving team from St. Brieux.  It was a close game for the duration with the teams trading baskets and the score within 3-5 points.  In the last minute, the #4 ranked St. Brieux Crusaders pulled away for a 79-67 win and a trip to HOOPLA.

At the 1A boys’ level, the #5 ranked Herbert Laurels travelled to Lake Lenore.  The Laurels lost a heartbreaker to Stoughton 66-62.  They then beat Pinehouse on the consolation side 72-57.  Meanwhile #10 ranked Frontier boys competed at Rocanville at another 1A regional.  Frontier suffered a 69-36 loss to Hepburn but turned around on the consolation side to beat Nakoda Oyade 62-50. In 1A girls’ action, #11 ranked Herbert participated at Middle Lake.  They took on Hague in their first game and lost 68-53.  The Laurels rebounded on the consolation side with a win over Kerrobert 83-39.
