The Shaunavon Shadows captured their second 2A 9 man SHSAA football championship in the last 3 years!  The Shadows hosted Indian Head in the final on November 11.  It was actually the Broncos scoring the first touchdown to make it 7-0 at halftime.  But the Shadows scored  two touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 14-7.  The fourth quarter was characterized by many turnovers but the Shadows prevailed and made it a 24-7 final score.  Congrats to the Shadows, head coach Garret Glasrud, manager Rachelle Dordu and all the other coaching staff!

                                The Fox Valley girls are 1A west regional volleyball champs!  The Legends travelled to Gravelbourg on Nov 10/11 and placed first in Pool A.  They had wins over Avonlea (2-0) and Gravelbourg (2-0).  This put them in the semifinal against Eston which was a rematch from conference play the week prior.  The Legends came out on top 2-1 and then took on Avonlea in the final.  Another close match but the Legends beat them for a second time 2-1 to gain the regional title!  Congrats to the Legends and their coaches Kendra Lehmann and Pat Wilde!  Hodgeville girls also took part.  They lost to Eston (2-1) and Chief Paskwa (2-0) and were eliminated.  Fox Valley will host the 1A girls SHSAA provincial volleyball championship on Nov 17 & 18.  It will be an exciting weekend of volleyball with 10 teams from throughout the province in attendance.  Those teams include the host Legends, Avonlea, Eston, Plenty, Borden, Englefeld, Rose Valley, Annaheim, Kakisiwew and Arcola.  The opening ceremonies will take place in Fox Valley gym starting at 10:45 a.m. on Friday.  The 10 teams will be divided into two pools of 5.  Both Fox Valley and Maple Creek High gyms will be used with games starting at 12 noon on Friday.  Games will on take place on the hour with the last game going at 6:00 p.m.  They resume again Saturday morning at 9:00.  Quarter finals will go at 12:30 p.m. then 1:30.  Semifinals will be at 3:00.  The bronze and gold medal matches will take place in Fox Valley.  Bronze will go at 4:30 and gold at 5:30.  Come out and watch some great volleyball action or follow us on twitter @swacsports for updates. 

                November 10 & 11 was also a very busy weekend of SHSAA volleyball playoffs with the SW hosting both boys and girls tournaments.  On the girls’ side, Leader hosted the 2A girls west regional.  Thanks to commissioner Lana Marshal and the Leader Saints for all their hard work!  Leader finished first in Pool B with wins over Pierceland (2-1) and Luseland (2-0).  The Saints then played Rossignol (Ile-a-la-Crosse) in the semi final and came up short 25-13, 25-17.   Rossignol went on to win the Regional title over Kerrobert.  But the Saints still had one last chance to qualify for provincials in the 3rd place game which was a rematch against Pierceland.  The Saints came out on top 25-22, 25-18 and will now play in 2A girls provincials in Davidson on Nov. 17 & 18.  Herbert Laurels were also in attendance at Leader.  They played in Pool A and were eliminated losing to  Rossignol (2-0) and Kerrobert (2-0).  Good luck to the Saints and their coach Lana Marshall at provincials!

                In 3A volleyball action, the Shaunavon Silhouettes attended the south regional in Regina.  The Silhouettes lost both matches in pool A and were eliminated.  They lost to Rocanville (2-0) and Langenburg (2-0).

                In 5A regional volleyball, the Swift Current Ardens travelled to Estevan.  The Ardens finished 2nd in Pool B with a record of 2 wins, 1 loss.  They had wins over Moose Jaw Central (2-0) and Estevan (2-0) but lost to Balgonie (2-1).   In the quarter finals, they faced 3rd place from Pool A Yorkton Raiders and won 2-0.  This placed them in the semi finals against Weyburn.  The Ardens lost 2-0 but still had one last chance to qualify for provincials.  They defeated Estevan in the 3rd place game 25-19, 25-20 and now travel to Melfort on Nov 17 & 18 to try and defend their provincial title.   Good luck to the Ardens and their coaches Chelsea Hassett and Marni Gutscher!

                The Swift Current Colts hosted 5A boys south regional on Nov 10 & 11.  The Colts finished first in Pool A with wins over Moose Jaw Central (25-9, 25-13) and Estevan (25-11, 25-13).  In the semi final, they played the only 3 set match of the tournament against the Balgonie Greenall Griffins.  The Colts took the first set 25-15 but then lost the second set 21-25.  The Colts were not to be denied and came through the third set with a 15-8 win.  They then took on Weyburn Eagles in the final and cruised to a 25-12, 25-19 win to capture the title.  The Colts will now advance to 5A boys’ provincials in Meadow Lake on Nov 17 & 18 along with 2nd place Weyburn and 3rd place Balgonie.  Good luck to the Colts and their coaches Dan Andrie & Brad Hennenfent!  Thanks for hosting the regional tournament!

                The rest of the boys’ volleyball teams were attending conference tournaments.  Thanks to Cabri School and comissioner Alisa Cooper for hosting the 1A boys’  tournament!  At the end of the 5 team round robin, there was a log jam at the top with three teams posting records of 3 wins and 1 loss.  After  the tie breaking procedure was applied, it turned out the Vanguard Valkyrs were first.  Vanguard posted wins over Beechy (2-1), Leader (2-0) and Frontier (2-1) but lost to Cabri/Hazlet (2-1).  In second place was the Leader Saints.  They had wins over Cabri/Hazlet (2-0), Frontier (2-0) and Beechy (2-0) but lost to Vangaurd (2-0).  Cabri/Hazlet finished third, Beechy fourth and Frontier fifth.  Both Vanguard and Leader will now advance to Regional play on Nov 18.  Good luck to both the Valkyrs and Leader Saints!

                The Fox Valley Legends captured the 2A boys’ conference title at Ecole Mathieu.  The Legends finished the 5 team round robin undefeated with a record of 4-0.  They beat Ponteix (2-0), Kincaid/Ecole Mathiue (2-0), Gravelbourg (2-0) and Eston (2-0).  The Ponteix Predators finished 3rd with a record of 2 wins and 2 losses.  The Predators beat Eston (2-0) and Gravelbourg (2-1) but lost to Fox Valley (2-0) and Kincaid/Ecole Mathieu (2-1).  Because of their third place finish, the Predators will also advance to Regionals.  Good luck to Fox Valley and Ponteix!

                In 4A boys’ conference volleyball, the Shaunavon Shadows placed first in Moose Jaw with a record of 4-0.  The Shadows had wins over Lumsden (2-1), Assiniboia (2-0), Moose Jaw Vanier (2-1) and Imperial (2-0).  Good luck to the Shadows at Regionals next weekend!
