March 9 & 10 was a busy weekend of high school sports as there were playoffs in wrestling, curling and basketball!  The Swift Current Comp wrestling team attended SHSAA provincials in Saskatoon and came home with 4 medals.  The Comp was represented by:  Aleah Nickel, Luke Nelson, Sebastien Marchand, Emmett Guider, Colt Cornelson and Josh Keller.  Congratulations to the gold medalist Aleah Nickel in the 60 kg weight class.  Aleah beat a wrestler from Walter Murray (Saskatoon) in the final.  Congrats to Sebastien Marchand who captured the silver medal in the 73 kg weight class.  Sebastien lost to a wrestler from Campbell Collegiate (Regina) in the final.  Two wrestlers won bronze medals.  Luke Nelson captured the bronze in the 65 kg class by beating a wrestler from Carpenter (Meadow Lake) while Emmett Guider got his bronze in the 77 kg class by beating a student from Carlyle.  Congrats to the Comp wrestling team and their coaches Daniel Marchand, Allen Blanke and manager Tracey Martin on a great showing.

Maple Creek girls won the silver medal in SHSAA provincial high school curling.  The Maple Creek and Gull Lake girls represented the SW at the championships in Ituna.  Eight teams took part.  Teams were divided into two pools of 4 with the top two in each pool advancing to the championship round on Saturday.  The Gull Lake girls dropped all three round robin games.  They lost to Moosomin (11-2), Wadena (8-5) and Allan (8-4).  The team composed of Rachel Murray, Nikita Trapp, Brenlyn Butts, Jacey McCarty and coach Bev Dutton were commended on their excellent sportsmanship.  In their final game against Allan, their opposition had an injured player.  The Gull Lake girls took turns sweeping for Allan to give them a helping hand -  great demonstration of sportsmanship!!

The Maple Creek girls had a record of 2-1 after the round robin.  They lost to Lemberg (13-2) but rebounded to beat Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney (11-10) and Ituna (8-7).  This put them into the championship round against the #1 seeded team from the other pool – Moosomin.  They defeated them 9-4 putting Maple Creek in a rematch against Lemberg.  The girls lost 10-2 in the final but claimed the silver medal.  Congrats to skip Morgan Robinson, third Sydney Windjack, second Rayel Jamieson, lead Madison Glascock and coach Holly Jamieson!

SHSAA basketball playoffs began with conference play.  Congratulations to the Shaunavon Silhouettes who captured the conference title in 2A girls’ play.  The Silhouettes travelled to Herbert.  In the first game of the day, Herbert dropped a close one to Moose Jaw Cornerstone 47-41.  The second game saw the Silhouettes defeat Davidson 69-42.  In the final, the Silhouettes were victorious over Moose Jaw 56-42.  Both teams will now advance to a SHSAA regional tournament next weekend.  Thanks to Herbert School and commissioner Randy McCulloch for hosting!

Also advancing will be the Leader Saints.  Thanks to Leader School and commissioners Errol Campbell and Megan Hayes for hosting.  The Saints won their first game over Eatonia 70-57.  This put them in the final against the Kerrobert Rebels.  The Saints lost 84-38 but will advance to a 1A regional next weekend.

The rest of the SW teams were not successful in advancing.  In 1A boy’s action at Coronach, the Friday game saw Herbert defeat Frontier 75-62.  Herbert then played Coronach on Saturday and lost 98-45.  In 2A boys’ conference play at Caronport, the Shaunavon Shadows were defeated by Southey 67-59.  In 3A boys’ play at Biggar, the Maple Creek Rebels lost to Rosetown 56-36.  Maple Creek girls participated in 3A girls’ action at Kindersley.  They beat Outlook in the first game on Friday 69-34 but lost to Assiniboia on Saturday by a score of 61-28.
