Chinook SD Sports Report

With our Chinook students returning to school on Tuesday, Sept 4, all the SWAC athletic directors/coaches have been busy getting their schools athletic programs up and running.  The first SouthWest Athletic Conference (SWAC) meeting was held on Thursday, Sept 30 and one piece of business was to update the SWAC calendar/host sites for 2018-2019.

The fall activities on the Sask High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) calendar are Golf, Cross Country, Soccer, Football and Volleyball.

Our first SWAC championship will take place on Saturday, Sept 8 when the SWAC district golf tournament takes place in Burstall.  Tee off time is 10:30 a.m. with golfers playing 18 holes.  Boys and girls will be competing in both team and individual categories.  The top 3 females and top 3 males, as well as the top female team and top male team, will advance to the SHSAA provincial championships which are in North Battleford on September 21/22.  Students in grade 9-12 are eligible to participate in golf.  Good Luck to all our golfers!

There are 4 football teams in 3 categories:

Gull Lake Lions (6 man football) have their first game on Friday, Sept 7.  Game time is tentatively set for 4:00.  They are hosting the Central Butte Bulldogs.

Swift Current Colts (12 man football) will travel to Moose Jaw Peacock on Saturday, Sept 8.  Game time is 3:15.

Shaunavon Shadows and Maple Creek Redmen (9 man football) do not have games this week.

Both the Swift Current Arden and Colt soccer teams take part in the Moose Jaw soccer league.  They start their seasons with double headers on Saturday, Sept 8 in Weyburn.

The Senior SWAC volleyball league should get under way the week of Sept 10th.

There is a volleyball official’s clinic set for Wednesday, Sept 5 at the Swift Current Comp lecture theater.  Start time is 6:30.  This is open to the public and is free of charge.  We welcome new officials!  There is a fee if you wish to register as an SVA (Sask Volleyball Association) official.
