Chinook SD Sports Report- Sept 23

Submitted by Valerie Gordon, Athletic Coordinator

The first major championship for SWAC is on Saturday, Sept 29th.  Our Cross Country championship is being held at Grasslands Park.   Anne Beauchamp from Val Marie is the commissioner.  Over 150 runners from schools across Chinook will participate.  Registration starts at 10:00, Walk through is at 11:00 and the first races will go at 12:00 noon.  Our youngest runners Pee Wees (gr 4-6) run first, followed by Bantams (gr 7/8).  The midget, junior and senior categories will follow.  Schools have been given tentative start times, but we usually run one race right after the other. Only midget, junior and senior runners can advance to the SHSAA Provincial Championship in Delisle on October 13th.

The SWAC golf team attended the Provincial Championship in North Battleford on Sept 21/22.   It was a brutal weekend for golf.  The temperatures were near freezing and light snow was an issue on Friday.  Gaige Calkins (SCCHS) had the best finish.  He was 4th overall, only 5 strokes off the gold medal score!  Ethan Fizell (SCCHS) finished 18th, Kaden Gramlich (Fox Valley) 43rd, Nikhil Pool and Theo Lautsch, both from SCCHS, were tied for 52nd.  The SCCHS team was 5th overall.  Congrats to the boys, and coaches Ron Bailey and Todd Gramlich, for persevering in tough conditions.

SWAC football teams were very busy this past week with 5 games scheduled.

The SCCHS Colts hosted a home game on Tuesday, Sept 18th against Weyburn.   The Colts moved to 3-0 in the Moose Jaw 12 Man football league with a 32-16 victory.  The Colts have looked very strong so far this season, but faced a tough opponent in Moose Jaw Saturday afternoon.  They lost to Moose Jaw Central 37-10.  Central and SCCHS now have identical 3-1 records in the 12 Man MJ league.  The Colts next scheduled game is an away match up on Saturday Sept 29 against Estevan.

Our other three SWAC football teams did a lot of traveling.   On Monday, Sept 17, our 6 man football team from Gull Lake traveled to Outlook (LCBI) to play their rescheduled game.  The Lions were on the losing end of a 40-26 score.  Gull Lake hit the road again on Friday, Sept 21 to play Central Butte.  Gull Lake regrouped after the early week loss and scored a convincing 55-0 win.

On that same Friday, Maple Creek had their first away game against Notre Dame.  Maple Creek came up short, losing the game 40-12.   Shaunavon was also on the road on Friday.  They traveled to Lumsden.  Our SWAC 9 Man teams suffered another defeat; Shaunavon lost the game 48-7.

For those who are fans of 9 man high school football, Friday, Sept 28 will be a busy day.   Shaunavon hosts Notre Dame and Gull Lake hosts Indian Head.  Both games are set for 4:00 starts.  Gull Lake will host Outlook LCBI on Saturday, Sept 29.  This 6 man league game is a 1:00 start.

The SCCHS Colt and Arden soccer teams had a successful week in the Moose Jaw Soccer league.   On Wednesday, Sept 19 the Colts soccer team hosted Moose Jaw Central boys. The final score was 3-1 for the Colts.   They moved to 3-0 in league play.  An impressive start to the Colt Soccer team’s season!

The following day it was the girls turn to play.   The SCCHS Ardens hosted Moose Jaw Central.  The Ardens won the game handily by a score of 7-0. They lead 2-0 at the half and then finished with a strong 5 goal second half.  The Arden’s league unbeaten streak starts anew.

On Saturday, Sept 22, both SCCHS teams were in Moose Jaw to play double headers against Peacock and Vanier..  SCCHS proved to be the better teams in both games.  The Arden’s continued their winning ways in the league, beating Peacock 8-0 and Vanier 4-0.  The Colts defeated Peacock 6-1 and also came away with the win against Vanier (who were restricted by only having 8 players).

The Ardens and Colts have no scheduled league games this upcoming week.

The SWAC senior girls’ volleyball league has begun.   Results of week 1 senior girl’s league (best of 3 sets).

SWAC is upping its social media presence. We have a twitter account (@swacsports), Instagram account (swacsports) and a SWAC Sports Facebook page.   SWAC welcomes everyone to follow us and keep up on sporting events in the southwest.

Special shout out to all our officials in football, soccer and volleyball.  None of our fall sports could happen without the dedication of our officials.  It is also great to see all the support from our SWAC schools and communities at the various athletic events.  Our SWAC kids love playing for their fans! If you haven’t taken in a SWAC sporting activity lately, I encourage you to check it out!
