Chinook SD Sports Report October 14

Submitted by Valerie Gordon

The week of October 7 was “School Sport Week” in Saskatchewan.  There were lots of events happening in our SWAC schools.  What a wonderful week of celebrating what makes school sport so special!!

CROSS COUNTRY

SWAC sent 16 cross country athletes to the SHSAA provincial championship in Delisle.  Bitter wind and cold temperatures had us at negative wind chill temperatures all day.  The athletes and coaches toughed out the weather conditions and Chinook/SWAC should be very proud of them.  Thanks to coaches Roberta McIntryre, Joanne Fournier, Alexus Weston and Stephen Boss for your leadership.

Our only top 10 finish was Hillary Lacelle, from SCCHS, in midget girls.  She finished 6th overall.....Congrats!!

On October 12, Shaunavon hit the road for a game in Fort Qu’Appelle.  The Shadows played in cold, wet conditions and battled to a 30-26 win.  Also, on that night, Maple Creek hosted Lumsden, but could not come away with the win.

Shaunavon and Maple Creek play their last regular season 9 man league games on Friday, Oct 19.  Maple Creek travels to Fort Qu’Appelle and Shaunavon will host Indian Head.

SCCHS finished 3rd in the MJ 12 man football league and the Colts hosted 6th place Estevan on Saturday, Oct. 13th and came away with a convincing 69-22 victory over Estevan.  The Colts play in the MJ league semi-final this Saturday, Oct 20.

SOCCER

SCCHS Colt and Arden soccer leagues have been completed.   Arden’s won their last league game and placed 2nd in the league standings.    SCCHS Colts placed first in their league.  Both the Arden and Colt soccer teams were in Moose Jaw for league playoffs on Saturday, Oct 13.  The SCCHS soccer teams won and will now challenge for the MJ Soccer league championship on Tuesday, Oct 16.

Herbert Boys ended their exhibition season on a strong note, as they head into the SHSAA Regional playoffs.   They won 3-1 over Vanier during a match up last week.

The Sask High School Athletic Association has given the SouthWest two Regional soccer tournaments (first step in provincial play downs).  Swift Current Ardens are hosting an 11 vs 11 girls regional (Weyburn and Yorkton attending) and Herbert boys are hosting a 7 vs 7 regional (Maymont and Delisle attending).

The first game is a 3A girl’s semifinal matchup on Friday, Oct 19 at 3:30.   The 1A boys will hit the field at 10:30 Saturday, Oct 20 for the semifinal.  The 3A girl’s finals is set for 12:30 and the 1A boy’s final is set for 3:30.   The draw for the tournament will be posted on the SHSAA website.

All games are played at Irwin Field.  Because this is the first round of SHSAA playoffs, a gate is charged.  If you are coming to watch, we hope you’ll show your appreciation for high school sport by supporting the gate.
