Each year the SHSAA office receives inquiries at the start of the high school badminton season in regard to the interpretation of the badminton service rule as written in the Laws of Badminton. To help clarify the interpretation of the service rule, the following statement has been prepared:
Over the years the badminton service rule has become a rule of interpretation as the Laws of Badminton include the phrase "an imaginary line round the body, level with the lowest part of the server's bottom rib". This rule similar to many rules in other activities then becomes an interpretation of the official and in most instances the official is simply asking if the serve is creating an advantage in terms of a flat / downward trajectory or driving the shuttle into the body of the opponent. This should be the same question that a player or coach should ask themselves before addressing their opponent or asking for an official to intervene in a match.
